Seeing is Knowing: The Universe

Planning the inaugural exhibition at the Weitz Center for Creativity's new Teaching Museum, Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota

Here at Carleton we’re interested in writing exercises that engage with exhibitions. We’ve found that writing about exhibitions is a uniquely challenging (in a good way) assignment for students in various disciplines: Astronomy, French, Sociology/Anthropology, English, History, Mathematics, etc., etc.
The Tang Museum at Skidmore College has also created some fabulous models for constructing course assignments around exhibitions. Alison Barnes (who is presenting at our conference, by the by), teaches an introductory English course that is called Writing in the Tang. Check out the link to learn about what she’s done with some of her students. It’s awesome.

And to further advertise my old lab’s website a bit (sorry), Carolyn has also given space to a number of space-artists: http://www.ciclops.org/art_index.php.  This doesn’t represent the full range of art available, I know, but it’s a starting place.  A lot of those pieces were done with an eye toward accuracy and frequently in consultation with astronomers.
